Ragusa

A Baroque Marvel in Sicily

We had a pleasure to stay in this city for more than a month and we loved it! The city of Ragusa, nestled in the southeastern part of Sicily, Italy. It is a destination that seamlessly blends history, stunning Baroque architecture, and mouthwatering Sicilian cuisine. In this guide, we'll explore the city's two distinct areas: the ancient Ragusa Ibla and the modern Ragusa Superiore.

Ragusa is known for its captivating history and remarkable Baroque architecture. Divided into two main districts, Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore, it offers a unique travel experience. Ragusa Ibla is the historic heart of the city, while Ragusa Superiore features an array of beautiful Baroque churches.

  • Getting There

To truly explore Ragusa and its surroundings, the best mode of transportation is by car. While there are some limited public transport options connecting Ragusa to other cities, public transportation in Sicily can be unreliable. The two closest airports are Comiso Airport, just 27 kilometers away, and Catania Airport, approximately 100 kilometers from Ragusa.

  • Accommodation

During your stay in Ragusa, you'll find a range of accommodation options, from charming B&Bs to luxury hotels. We highly recommend the historic Relais Antica Badia, located just by the Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista. Notably, it is the only 5-star hotel in the area, providing an elevated level of comfort and service. Booking in advance is advisable, especially during the peak tourist season.

If you're looking for accommodations that offer a more authentic off-town Sicilian experience, consider exploring options outside the town itself. These accommodations often provide a deeper connection to Sicilian culture and landscapes, allowing you to experience the island's lifestyle beyond the city limits.

  • What to do and see:

We can split this part in two parts, just as the city, because let’s be honest - you do not want to be wandering from one part to another. The step count would just go mad…

    Ragusa Ibla:

  • Explore the Cathedral of San Giorgio, an architectural masterpiece.

  • Enjoy panoramic views of Ragusa Ibla from various viewpoints. There is a lot of them...

  • Visit the Giardino Ibleo, a sprawling park at the end of Ragusa Ibla.

    Ragusa Superiore:

  • Marvel at the Church Ecce Homo and Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista, two spectacular Baroque churches.

  • Sip an aperitivo at Al Gradino 284, a bar with a breathtaking view nestled between Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore.

  • Dining and Cuisine:

Sicilian cuisine is renowned for its flavors, and Ragusa has a plethora of dining options to satisfy your taste buds:

  • Trattoria La Bettola offers local dishes in a cozy terrace setting, perfect for a romantic meal.

  • Officina 31 is an excellent spot to enjoy a delightful aperitivo while taking in the city's ambiance

  • Don't leave Ragusa without trying the renowned Polli alla Brace (roasted chicken) at The Number One, a local favorite.

Ragusa boasts several other culinary gems outside the city's old town:

  • Pizzeria L'Approdo is renowned for its delicious pizza and wine selection.

  • Camiolo - pizza & ciccia serves up some of the best pizza in town.

  • Caffè Sicilia offers top-class pastries that are simply irresistible.

  • Marylin is a versatile establishment where you can indulge in pastries, pizzas, coffee, and cocktails amidst a lively atmosphere.

  • Parking:

Parking in the old town and the central parts of Ragusa Superiore is predominantly paid.

You'll find parking spaces marked with blue painted lines on the ground. Yellow lines are designated for residents, while white lines indicate free parking areas. Payment can be made easily at parking meters on the street or through various mobile apps. We found the "Easy Park" app to be convenient and reliable.

Additionally, there are paid parking facilities, such as:

  • Parcheggio Repubblica: Conveniently located between both parts of the city.

  • Sisosta Parcheggio Sotteraneo: An underground parking option in Ragusa Superiore.

  • Area di parcheggio Giardino Ibleo: A parking area conveniently situated near the old town.

so...
